Keeping in Reading Zone

A virtual, read-for-prizes book club for children at all levels. We can:

  • Help you find "just right" books,
  • Ensure your child is reading, and reading for comprehension, and
  • Create enthusiasm for reading at school and at home.

Reading Counts! helps give you comfort that your child really is taking in what he or she is reading. Plus it will help the night-time reading ritual go that much more smoothly!

Here's how it works

  1. Find a "just right" book -- click here to see our searchable data-base. Each book has a point value based on difficulty and length. You can refine your search by appropriateness of the material too, called Interest Level.
  2. Your child reads the book.
  3. Your child takes a short quiz (on-line, at home) and earns points. Click here for quiz examples.
  4. Points are used for cool prizes at an end of semester party.

Reading Counts! is powered by Accelerated Reader -- click here for more information . Book lists are searchable by difficulty, age-appropriateness of the material, by subject and by recommended lists and award lists. We determine your child's "Just right" level with quick, 10-minute on-line reading test.

Take book quiz for points here

The test for points is the "Practice Quiz." Your young child can click on the speaker to have questions read out loud to them. To earn any points your child needs to get 60% correct. To earn the full point score requires answering all questions correctly.

Check your child's progress here

Enter as a parent, with your username and password. See a history of books read, points scored and progress on goals. Check test results with an explanation of what they mean in the STAR Reader tab lower on the page.

Download this one-page step-by-step Reading Counts! Parent Guide for your fridge or bulletin board. There is a place to keep usernames, passwords, and reading zones for each child.
