How Gemm Is Different From Tutoring

Tutors and tutoring centers basically re-teach the content that was not absorbed at school. They deliver this same instruction in one-to-one or small groups which does result in modest, incremental progress most of time. However there is no research that shows any long term, enduring gains from tutoring.

We take a very different approach. We are part of a fast growing new wave in learning -- over a decade in the making -- that targets the root causes of the learning problem, aiming to resolve them once and for all. While this approach has been made possible by advances in brain science, it is already tried and tested, and is being used by thousands of schools and clinicians worldwide. It represents the future of after-school education.

Our home-based, treat-the-underlying-problem approach creates three major points of difference versus tutoring:

1. We are cost effective. Our one-time program makes enduring changes in your child's reading and learning skills, the ultimate goal being learning independence. This compares with a 12-15 months at most tutoring centers, with no guarantees that a year or two later more tutoring will be needed. Our program has the potential to save you thousands of dollars in future tutoring costs.



2. We can be life-changing. While tutoring tends to be more incremental in its goals -- how can it not be given it is re-teaching rather than trying anything new -- our goal is profound change! By empowering your child to learn normally we can boost confidence and make reading and learning easier. This pays dividends in so many ways. Homework goes more easily, school is more fun, grades are higher and reading for pleasure is a realistic goal.



3. We are convenient. If you choose our at home service there is no need to keep to the schedule of a tutor, or to travel back and forth to a center every day. You can do the program at home at a time that suits you -- sometimes right after school, sometimes later, sometimes in the weekend. You can even break the it into two sessions if you like.

Choose a tutor when ...

Your child has sound fundamental skills but difficulty in one subject, such as "getting" geometry. Individual tutors with specific skills, such as Orton-Gillingham instructors, who provide individualized instruction catering to a child's learning style can also be helpful, although they also do not necessarily target the underlying learning issues.

Most students come to us because they are either behind in their reading or have language based learning issue.
