Auditory processing is fundamental to all learning.
 - CAPD impacts listening, reading, attention and thinking.
 - CAPD is not hard wired. It can be improved with exercise.
Auditory Processing Disorder & Dyslexia
Difficulty following multi-step directions?
-
Lack of focus at school or doing homework?
-
Symptoms of dyslexia -- lack of reading fluency, weak comprehension skills, unable to read for long periods?
If these are familiar symptoms, you are not alone. This is an all too common package, experienced by many students before they come to Gemm Learning, that combines central auditory processing disorder or CAPD (sometimes called APD) and dyslexia.
Auditory Processing And Dyslexia
Many children diagnosed with auditory processing disorder develop dyslexia. This is because for most dyslexic children, their reading difficulty stems from an underlying language processing difficulty.
They switch their b's and d's, not because they see them the same, but rather because they hear them the same.
Note that for many children these symptoms live below the surface in their early years. They are able process well enough to function, to hear words as whole sounds but then in 3rd or 4th grade it becomes clear that their reading is inefficient. They cannot break words apart -- "bat" to b-a-t -- with the efficiency required for reading comprehension.
How We Help Dyslexia
For dyslexic children with an auditory processing disorder (APD) we use Fast ForWord software. It directly addresses the underlying auditory processing problem causing dyslexia. Reading is a language issue. By improving efficiency in underlying processing and often-related working memory and attention skills we expect to:
> Make decoding more comfortable and fluent, by giving the child the ability to break words apart in his/her head. You will not recognize a word in text form that is not stored that way in word memory.
> Significantly improve reading comprehension, by removing the distraction of decoding from the reading process.
> Boost language skills, both receptive -- following directions -- and expressive.
Fast ForWordhas helped hundreds of thousands of students overcome dyslexia since its launch over a decade ago.
Our Service and Outcomes
Most students spend 4-6 months with us, 30 minutes a day, five times a week. Elementary age children tend to take longer, older students may take less. Students work on software at home that automatically uploads data after every session to our server. You will have a dedicated Gemm professional -- your partner and mentor -- who will develop an individualized protocol for your child and then will regularly review these uploads, make protocol adjustments and provide direction and support.
Auditory processing program treatment
Our outcomes do vary, but auditory processing disorder and dyslexia are the diagnoses where we have the most success. Fast ForWord software was founded on the idea that: (1) reading is an auditory processing issue, and (2) the brain can be taught to overcome auditory processing disorder and related dyslexia symptoms.
Gemm's consistent outcomes are testimony to the success of the software in delivering on these goals.
