Help For Dyslexia

Gemm specializes in providing dyslexia help for children and adults using the Fast ForWord reading program.  Students work at home with our guidance on software that treats the main causes of dyslexia in children and adults.

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia  has been best defined as an "unexpected difficulty with reading," nothing more.  Most often, in fact >85% of the time, it stems from a weakness in one or more cognitive skills required for reading.

In reality, it's amazing there are not more dyslexic children or adults.  There are by one scientist's count, 43 fundamental cognitive skills - such as auditory processing, working memory, attention, sequencing -- used in the reading process. 

The learning chain is as strong as its weakest link.  A glitch in any one of these skills will impact reading.  If the glitch is weak enough, you have a dyslexia diagnosis.

Can Dyslexia Be Cured?

A lot has changed in our understanding of dyslexia over the past decade or so.  It is still common for many adults to describe themselves as dyslexic, and a lot is made of famous "dyslexics" like Charles Schwab and Kinkos founder, Paul Orfalea take great pride in their ability to overcome their dyslexia and go onto great things.

That was then. 

This is now. 

Dyslexia is no longer a life sentence.

Since the advent of the functional MRI, an MRI that takes videos of brain activity, scientists have been able to identify the dark spots related to under-developed cognitive function in struggling readers.

Even more compelling, scientists have been able to confirm (or not!) the efficacy of various reading programs.  Programs that impact cognitive function work, ones that do not change the fMRI do not.
