Gemm Learning primarily uses Fast ForWord software to build cognitive skills in children, primarily related to language processing, the source of 90% plus of reading problems and a host or learning issues. Here are the main cognitive skills targeted, called MAPS:

Working Memory. Poor retention impedes reading comprehension and following instruction in class. It is also correlated to IQ -- the more one can hold in the mind at one time, the stronger the analytical and thinking skills. Fast ForWord has several exercises for improving working memory.

Attention stamina. An inability to stay engaged while reading (and in class) is common in children with any kind of processing issue. Fast ForWord helps lessen the impact of attention deficits.

Processing. This is the core of the Fast ForWord program. Not only is processing an essential cognitive skill in reading, it will make it easier to follow instruction in class. More on auditory processing disorder.

Sequencing. Consonants, sentences and expressive thought all require the ability to sequence efficiently.

The program adapts to each student. It stress-tests a wide number of skills, moving quickly through the exercises that are not needed so that children are building the cognitive skills they need, using brain fitness principles.

Fast ForWord Cognitive Programs

Fast ForWord has two cognitive skills programs for children(actually three if you count the pre-K Basics program):

Fast ForWord Language v2 (or Literacy, for middle and high schoolers). This first program finds a starting point and then builds these cognitive skills in children to functionality at natural language speed, a minimum requirement for reading fluency and comprehension. Language to Reading v2 (or Literacy Advanced). This follow-up program pushes student processing and other cognitive skills to their biological limit.

BrainWare Safari

In some cases, particularly where there is evidence of cognitive impediments to reading not related to language processing -- such as visual processing, attention issues related to sensory integration issues, longer term retention issues -- Gemm Learning will add BrainWare Safari into a student's protocol.
