"Not only is she a willing reader, she is
reading constantly now. It's bliss!"

How to Help Your Child Read
Reading is an essential skill for your child to learn. It’s the foundation of education, and we understand how frustrating it can be when a child struggles to read. There are options to help both you and your child through this process, and we can guide you to overcome the challenges.
Your Child's Struggle
We know that when your child struggles with reading, his homework is stressful and his grades aren’t where they could be. Usually, the issue isn’t merely an attention problem; there’s a problem with the way your child’s brain has been trained to think.
At Gemm Learning, we know that these problems don’t have to be permanent. That’s why we’re committed to offering a program that overcomes reading difficulties and empowers learning excellence.
How Fast ForWord Helps
Gemm Learning is a provider of Fast ForWord, an at-home online program that helps children with reading comprehension. We understand that if your child doesn’t enjoy reading, she’s not going to improve. Fast ForWord is the most recommended North American treatment for many reading-related disabilities – all because it makes reading easy, natural and fun for kids.
Fast ForWord focuses on the following to help struggling readers:
At Gemm Learning, we provide guidance throughout your program to ensure that you follow sequential lessons at your child’s pace. First, phonics is mastered to improve the ability to sound out words. Then there’s a focus on language structure, spelling and vocabulary. Your child’s goal is to build language skills that become automatic, fluent, and easy to use.
Develop High Level Reading Comprehension
While your child might understand literal meanings of texts, reading comprehension takes it to a new level. Fast ForWord empowers children to think critically while reading, extracting main ideas from the text.
This can only be done once a child can read fluently, though, and we place an emphasis on guiding your child through every step. Her skills will first be assessed, and then her program will build skills at the pace that matches her needs. As she moves through every stage, the complexity of her skills will grow toward full fluency and comprehension.
At Gemm Learning, we want to empower children for success – in school and beyond. We are here for your entire family as we work together to help your child overcome reading struggles.
Treat Underlying Issues Once, Not Symptoms Forever
88% of struggling readers share a common difficulty -- processing delays that undermine phonological awareness and reading efficiency.
Our reading programs use advances in neuroscience to rewire and improve processing and related reading skills for all ages. Most students see significant reading gains in just a few months.
Program Steps & Goals
We train reading skills in sequence, step by step starting at the base of the pyramid.
Students go through these three phases:
Build cognitive fundamentals
The first reading program strengthens the auditory processing, phonological awareness, and related skills required for decoding.
Make reading more fluent
We then train decoding automaticity, vocabulary, spelling and language structure. We will sometimes insert Reading Assistant here, speech recognition-based oral reading practice.
Develop reading comprehension
We then focus on reading comprehension and critical thinking as required to meet the Common Core State Standards.
While many online reading programs require years of instruction, our one-time program takes about 4-6 months to complete, using a five day a week, 30 minute a day protocol.
Convenient and Engaging
Being online at home, our reading programs are convenient and easy to access. The software has a computer-game feel, which we augment with online student rewards and mailed certificates.
Fast ForWord uses adaptive algorithms based on neuroscience principles that create the intensity required to rewire learning. It is a natural learning approach -- interactive discovery -- similar to how children learn language.
Ranked #1 in 2-year Nevada State Study
Our reading programs are research-validated, backed by 240+ studies in 40 countries, including coming in as "most effective" out of 24 reading programs in a comprehensive 2-year Nevada State Study.
Reading Programs By Age
Younger children, 5 years and older, work mainly on processing, language and phonological awareness. Our elementary reading programs are adaptive, meaning students progress at their own pace, without frustration.
Our middle school reading programs revisit reading fluency before focusing on reading comprehension. Our high school reading programs build reading speed and comprehension with critical thinking, needed in high stakes tests.
