Homeschool Reading Program

Help For Dyslexia, Auditory Processing, Learning and Language Delays

Many home schooled children have reading difficulties, including dyslexia, stemming from an underlying cognitive weakness such as central auditory processing disorder (called CAPD), ADD or weak working memory skills.

Over time the symptoms change -- early phonics and fluency difficulties morph into weak reading comprehension and/or an unwillingness to read. The sooner these issues are dealt with, the sooner your home schooled child can get onto a healthy reading trajectory.

Our Home School Reading and Dyslexia Program

Dyslexia can be problematical for home school parents as most dyslexia programs require professional help. But now Gemm Learning has an alternative: we provide innovative and proven dyslexia help for home schoolers -- an intensive, computer based service with professional oversight and direction.

Our software, Fast ForWord, is a "reading intervention" -- it targets the underlying issues that impede reading progress. Because it works at a cognitive level it actually improves a broad range of reading and learning skills.

Importantly for the home schooling parent, it is adaptive, meaning that students work at their own pace without fear of frustration from it being too hard or too easy. Its incremental approach first builds a secure cognitive foundation for reading and then develops the fundamental skills of decoding, reading fluency and comprehension.

Gemm's program is ideal for home schoolers. Think of us as your home-based Resource Room offering a sophisticated reading intervention typically only found at the best schools. Plus, our program is adaptive, meaning that it can be done at home without fear of your child experiencing any of the frustration that comes when material is too difficult.

How Gemm Helps Early Reading and Phonics

Rather than using a phonics program or spending hours with flash cards -- all intended to work around an underlying cognitive weakness -- our program helps students process more quickly and more accurately, making them more phonics aware, reading-enabled. Our goal is to provide a reading makeover that will prepare your child for learning phonics and reading. Without this fundamental cognitive improvement, reading will always be a challenge.

Gemm Helps Reading Comprehension

Most reading comprehension problems stem from an inability of the brain to concentrate on two things at once -- in this case, decoding (reading) and extracting meaning (comprehension).

Gemm's two-step program is:

Step 1:  Make decoding automatic.  If a student is able to decode effortlessly, subconsciously, like riding a bike, his or her brain is able to fully focus on comprehension.  Our program removes the cognitive impediments to reading automaticity.

Step 2: Re-teach reading fundamentals.  Once our program has helped enable reading fluency we turn our attention to reading accuracy -- undoing prior bad reading habits developed to cope, language structure and reading comprehension, literal and inferential.

While Gemm's programs are particularly strong in targeting reading difficulties, because they work at a fundamental level they also help learning issues that home school parents struggle to find help for, including attention stamina and focus, expressive and receptive language -- listening skills -- and study habits.
