Academic achievement requires good smarts AND sound learning skills. Many children under-achieve at school not because of their smarts, but rather because of inadequate learning skills. While IQ is still thought to be fixed, learning skills certainly are not. Cognitive language and learning skills can be improved with the appropriate training. Our Fast ForWord learning software addresses cognitive and language skills to help the symptoms listed above and other learning difficulties. Specific skills exercised include:

We use Fast ForWord software to boost speech and language skills in children. By improving processing speed so that children are able to listen more accurately, our program helps vocabulary, engaging in class, articulation, talkativeness and the ability to follow multi-step directions. It also provides the foundation for sound reading comprehension. In older children these issues morph into attention and working memory issues that undermine reading and test taking.

Attention Stamina

Attention deficit disorders are caused by a number of different issues with two central themes:

• Inability to engage because the content is too hard to access, i.e., listening is challenging, reading is exhausting, etc.

• Vulnerability to distraction because internal thinking is noisy or busy

In many cases -- particularly where the attention deficit disorder is accompanied by a speech or language delay -- our programs have been extremely effective.

Learning Independence By Improving Study Skills

Learning frustration can be overcome by isolating and exercising the individual cognitive skills that are impeding your child's progress. While there are thousands of learning diagnoses these days, the vast majority of learning frustration stems from an auditory processing disorder that undermines reading, attention and memory skills or a sensory integration difficulty that makes focus and organization challenging. Gemm Learning will develop a protocol from its learning software library to improve study skills for your child based on his/her unique needs, our ultimate goal being learning independence.

There are a number of reasons for homework frustration. Is your child hearing the assignments in class? Is he/she engaged in class when the material is covered? For many children, the reading difficulties only surface in middle school when the text is more challenging and inefficient or flawed reading skills are exposed.
