Middle School Reading Programs

Children who read at grade level in elementary school do not automatically become proficient middle school readers. Many have difficulty transitioning from simple children’s stories to the more complex content of textbooks in middle and high school. Moreover, the data shows that three quarters of students who exit third grade as struggling readers continue to read poorly in high school.

Our middle school reading programs can be used for remedial purposes, to help struggling readers overcome their early reading difficulties, or as an advanced reading program that helps middle school readers develop the metacognitive reading comprehension required for high school.

Do any of these describe your child?

  • Reading comprehension is falling off in middle school
  • Still not a fluent reader
  • Does not read for pleasure or resists reading
  • Slow reader

Middle School Reading Programs

These are common middle school reading problems caused by a failure to develop fundamental cognitive skills, decoding fluency and/or vocabulary and language structure knowledge in elementary school.

Reading Programs Overview
Our middle school reading programs first target the underlying cause of any reading difficulty, by exercising cognitive skills -- processing, memory, attention and sequencing -- improving reading fluency by making decoding more automatic.
Reading fluency programs

At the same time, the middle school student will also see exercises aimed at language familiarity -- syntax, language structure, vocabulary -- and language dexterity -- metalinguistics. These combined skills create the foundation for reading comprehension.
Reading comprehension programs

Our adaptive programs isolate and exercise reading skills at each level, developing a methodical, and comprehensive approach to reading, the goal being to help middle school students develop the middle school reading comprehension skills required to meet the challenging 8th reading standard.

Middle School Reading Comprehension Standards

Middle school reading requirements vary dramatically by grade. 6th grade reading is still essentially a literal reading comprehension standard, where students are confronted with longer, more complex text, requiring sound decoding skills, and good attention and reading stamina.

By 8th grade however, a student is expected to have mastered reading comprehension with metacognition, i.e., the ability to self correct and adjust while reading. Middle school students are taught metacognitive reading comprehension strategies to enable readers to tackle challenging texts with greater independence. They are expected to graduate 8th grade reading at a high school reading level.

If your child has not mastered the fundamentals, instruction of these middle school reading strategies is of no value, as too much concentration is required in the decoding phase.

Motivating Middle School Students
Our software, Fast ForWord, is an aerobic program. It is not a drug that can be taken passively. It is interactive software that requires active participation to be effective. While the computer game feel and prizes we supply through Gemm City are generally all that are needed to motivate elementary age students, our middle school reading program is a different story. Your middle schooler needs to buy in. He/she needs to feel that they want to make a difference to their reading, and their everyday school experience.

Our programs can have a profound quality of life impact on your middle school child -- easier reading, better grades, less time on homework, improved confidence and less learning stress. And, for older children, these gains can start to emerge in just a few weeks, if your child abides by our protocols. If you think your child needs help, and is motivated to do better, call to find out if we can help.
