Reading Help
Intervention Alternatives For Children
There is no doubt that strong reading skills are an incredible advantage in life. Literacy statistics show that skilled readers read many millions more words than struggling readers, helping grades, vocabulary, knowledge, and understanding of life. Reading help at an early age can have a profound impact on your child's life story.

Early Warning Signs
Since reading is essentially a language skill, parents should be able to detect early warning signs of upcoming reading difficulties in their child's language and behavior, if they know what they are looking for.
Early warning signs
If you have concerns that one or more of your child's reading skills are not developing as they should, and that he/she may need help with reading, you have three basic alternatives:
- Extra Reading Instruction
This is mainly tutoring after-school, but also includes extra reading help during school hours, reading software and extra homework using word lists, etc.
In many ways, however, these forms of assistance represent more of the same, more of what is already not working for your child. - Extra Reading Practice
The best way to improve reading skills, and in particular, to help with reading comprehension and developing higher level metacognitive reading strategies, is to just read and read.
For struggling readers, however, reading is a chore at best. Students who need help with reading, tend to read only a fraction of the words of their proficient reading peers. And so, despite the extra help that struggling readers receive, the reading gap tends to widen, because of this reading practice gap.
If your child needs help with reading and is off to a slow start, here are some practical ideas based on neuroscience and cognitive research, that you can add to your every day routine to help your child with reading.
Reading practice ideas - Target Underlying Difficulty
This is an emerging option, that includes reading programs like Fast ForWord. The idea here is to provide help with reading by targeting and removing the underlying impediments to reading using new approaches not used at school, so that reading is easier and the student will then be able (and inclined) to put in the reading time required for reading proficiency.
Gemm Learning uses research based reading programs in the Fast ForWord software series that draws on neuroscience, cognitive reading research, lingusitics and the science of natural learning, a comprehensive approach, to help with reading at each skill level along the way to reading proficiency.
