The Importance of Early Language

Speech delays in children 2 or 3 years old almost always lead to learning or reading difficulties at elementary school. This is because the speech problems are overwhelmingly due to language processing problems, sometimes called auditory processing.

If a child is not hearing the language with clarity, they will either speak very little, use a limited vocabulary and/or articulate clearly. They will also struggle following directions, especially multi-step directions or instructions. This same inability to process language almost always leads to reading problems.
