Case Study: How Marcus Overcame Dyslexia

Marcus came to Gemm Learning with a formal dyslexia diagnosis and eroding confidence. All of that changed in one summer.

Marcus

Age: 8
Location: BC
Diagnosis: Dyslexia

Protocol

Marcus worked for 50 minutes per day, 5 days per week, for 3 months. He completed the first cognitive program and part of the second over the summer.

Results

Marcus was losing academic confidence. He knew he was not working on the same level as his peers. Today, he is approaching reading confidently, making gains, and working hard to achieve his goals.

The Challenge: Falling Behind & Losing Confidence

Before starting the program, Marcus was acutely aware that he was falling behind his peers. He struggled to grasp letter sounds and spelling patterns, often resorting to guessing words or memorizing entire books just to keep up.

While he could recognize some sight words on a list, he couldn’t decode them when they appeared in a different context. This inability to retain words pointed to a lack of ability to break words down phonetically, which is how the brain builds auditory word memory.  This lack of phonemic awareness is almost always caused by a language processing delay.

“He was losing academic confidence. He knew he was not working on the same level as his peers.”

The Search for the Right Support

Marcus’s family tried multiple interventions, but hit roadblocks at every turn:

  • The first program they tried was too advanced.
  • A promising university-led alternative was abruptly canceled when the instructor fell ill.
  • Traditional approaches simply weren’t working, and the emotional toll on Marcus was growing.

That’s when his mother remembered an article she had saved about the dyslexia reading programs at Gemm Learning and decided to try it at the end of Marcus’s second-grade year.

The Training Routine and Need for Support

Marcus adapted quickly to the new routine, viewing the daily exercises as special one-on-one time with his mom, who sat alongside Marcus for several sessions listening in with a headphone splitter.

However, phonemic awareness proved to be his biggest hurdle. He deeply struggled with exercises that required discriminating between similar sounds.

The Solution:  The Gemm Learning team could see the difficulty Marcus was having on the sound discrimination exercises. They scheduled a couple of remote sessions to work virtually with Marcus while he was in the program. They gave him exercise strategies and encouragement that helped him break through the plateau.

Results: A Transformation Noticed by Teachers

The real proof of success came just days into the new school year. Marcus’s resource teacher pulled him aside for a reading assessment—and the change was so staggering that the teacher emailed his parents immediately.

Without knowing Marcus had spent the summer using Fast ForWord, the teacher noted that whatever they did over the summer made more of a difference than any of his traditional school instruction.

“We’ve definitely seen that the way he approaches a book, he’s more confident. He understands it!” – Marcus’Mother

Key Changes for Marcus:

  • Increased Confidence: Marcus now approaches books eagerly and with an open mind.
  • True Comprehension: He is no longer just memorizing; he is actually understanding the text.
  • Measurable Gains: His hard work has translated directly into classroom success.

“You have to be willing to commit to it. It is a time investment. If the traditional approach to reading hasn’t worked, then this might be something worth considering.” – Marcus’ mother
