Neuroscience Has Not Progressed As Much As We’d Hoped
While the trends in learning technology have been interesting, so far new understanding about the brain plus much more powerful computers have not resulted in an intervention better than Fast ForWord software. It still remains the standout learning intervention for reading and learning delays.
What Has Changed?
Over the past 10 years, there have been innovations that leverage the power of digital devices, artificial intelligence, and personalized learning approaches to provide children with new tools and resources to enhance their educational experiences. Here are some examples:
Educational Apps: There has been an explosion of educational apps for smartphones and tablets. These apps cover a wide range of subjects, including math, literacy, science, and language learning. They often incorporate interactive elements and gamification to make learning more engaging.
Audiobooks: Digital books, including e-books and audiobooks, offer features like read-aloud functionality, interactive illustrations, and accessibility options to cater to different learning styles and abilities.
Online Educational Resources: Numerous websites and online platforms provide educational content for children. These resources include video lessons, quizzes, and interactive simulations on various subjects.
Speech Recognition and Language Learning Tools: Speech recognition technology has improved language learning apps, such as ClearFluency provided by Gemm Learning.
Online Tutoring and Lessons: Various online tutoring and lesson platforms,led by Khan Academy, connect and teach students.
Accessible Learning Tools: Technology has improved accessibility for students with disabilities. Screen readers, text-to-speech software, and other assistive technologies have made it easier for children with special needs to access educational content.
It’s important to note that while these technologies can be powerful tools for learning, their effectiveness often depends on how they are used. At home learning without oversight is every bit as ineffective today as it was 10 years ago. Additionally, privacy and security considerations are important when children use digital educational resources.
Despite the new technology – faster processing, AI, brain plasticity, etc. – and a few new approaches, e.g., neurofeedback, nothing has come along that is more effective than Fast ForWord that was first released over 15 years ago
